More information about this variety will follow shortly
Calardis Royal is the latest red-berried PIWI variety from Geilweilerhof and was submitted for plant variety protection in 2024. A very high resistance to powdery mildew, combined with high resistance to downy mildew, allows for savings of up to 80% on plant protection products. Despite the more compact cluster structure with small berries, its resistance to Botrytis is moderate to high. The ripening period is medium to late and is comparable to that of Merlot.
Oenological potential:
A complex red wine with aromas of dark berries, such as blackberry, elderberry, or cherry, accompanied by hints of tobacco and clove. Depending on the vintage, it may also have a Mediterranean character with robust tannins. Aging in barriques or oak barrels is then beneficial for effectively integrating the tannins and rounding out the wine.
